Mycotest is used for the identification and semi-quantitative determination of urogenital Mycoplasmas M. hominis (M.h.) and U. urealyticum (U.u.). Mycoplasmas Mh and Uu are small (0.2 – 0.5 μm) pleomorphic microorganisms lacking a cell wall, enclosed only by a cell membrane rich in sterols. Due to the absence of a cell wall, their shape is not constant and they do not stain with Gram stain. For the same reason, β-lactam antibiotics are not active against them. They are particularly sensitive and have high nutritional requirements. For a correct diagnosis, special care is required for samples such as proper collection, transportation, and preservation with specific material for mycoplasmas (MYC. U-A Broth) and diagnosis with nutrient media enriched with the necessary components. Mh and Uu in certain categories of healthy men and women coexist and are part of the normal flora of the lower urogenital system. This colonization varies and depends on various factors such as age, race, hormonal status, number of sexual partners and is greater in women, especially during pregnancy.
