Mycoplasma A7 is used for the laboratory diagnosis of urogenital mycoplasmas M. hominis (Mh), U. urealyticum (Uu) and M. Fermentans (Mf). This is achieved through selective cultivation, microscopic identification, and numerical estimation. Mh and Uu mycoplasmas are small (0.2 – 0.5 μm) pleomorphic microorganisms that lack a cell wall, being enclosed only by a cell membrane rich in sterols. Due to the absence of a cell wall, their shape is not constant, and they do not stain with Gram stain. For the same reason, β-lactam antibiotics are not effective against them. They are particularly sensitive and have high nutritional requirements. For correct diagnosis, special care is required for samples, such as proper collection, transport, and preservation with special material for mycoplasmas (MYCOPLASMA U-A BROTH 2ml Cat no 080096) and diagnosis with nutrient media enriched with the necessary components. Mh and Uu co-exist in certain categories of healthy men and women and are part of the normal flora of the lower urogenital system. This colonization varies and depends on various factors such as age, race, hormonal status, number of sexual partners and is higher in women, especially during pregnancy.
