Description
Mycoplasma U-A Broth (M. U-A) is used for the detection, maintenance and transport of urogenital mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma hominis (Mh) & Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu). M. U-A cannot be used as a diagnostic medium on its own. Therefore, it must always be accompanied by a Mycoplasma identification medium (MycoTest Cat. No 100081, Mycoplasma A7 agar Cat no 050080 or Mycotest Agar Cat. No 100331). Mycoplasmas are the smallest prokaryotic organisms that can grow extracellularly in nutrient media. They completely lack a cell wall. To this property they owe their particular plasticity (pleomorphism), their resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and other biological characteristics. They are surrounded by a trilaminar cytoplasmic membrane and their shape varies from spherical, ovoid, to filamentous with budding. Their protein synthesis is inhibited by antibiotics such as tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, erythromycin and chloramphenicol. They contain DNA and RNA. The DNA constitutes 1.5 – 4% of their weight. This extremely small size of the genome limits their biosynthetic capacity, helps to interpret their complex nutritional requirements for cultivation and implies a saprophytic or parasitic existence for most species. Mycoplasmas of the genital system Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum Mycoplasma fermentans & Mycoplasma genitalium are the most frequently isolated Mollicutes from genital system infections. Clinical dimensions of these infections are of utmost importance for human health.
